Professional Hair & Makeup

The single biggest factor in how your maternity photos turn out -- professional hair and makeup for the shoot.

Unlike everyday makeup or salon styling, hair and makeup for photography is calculated to make you look beautiful "in front of the camera, under studio lighting." It's a professional technique that considers how light falls, how shadows are cast, and how skin texture appears in monochrome photographs.

At Studio Mozart, your session is handled by a female hair and makeup artist with over 20 years of industry experience working on the front lines of magazines such as Ray and CanCam, TV commercials, and television programs. This active professional -- currently working on photo books, editorial spreads, and commercial shoots -- provides meticulous application from base makeup through hair styling adjustments during the shoot and hair changes to match outfit changes, staying by your side from start to finish.

Photographer Komachi and our hair and makeup artist have worked together for over 20 years. Thanks to the trust built through years of working on set together, unspoken communication flows naturally during shoots -- "adjust this a little more here" is understood without a word. As a team, they bring out your most beautiful moments.

Why Professional Makeup
for Photography Matters

Why Professional Makeup Matters

"Do I really need makeup for black-and-white photos?" -- This is one of the most common questions we receive from clients.

In fact, the effect of makeup becomes even greater precisely because of monochrome photography. In color photos, the abundance of color information disperses the eye, but in monochrome, without color, bone structure shadows, skin smoothness, and the contours of eyes and lips come through directly. In other words, what makeup refines becomes the beauty of the photograph itself.

Please look at the photos below. We've placed the color and monochrome versions of the same shot side by side. You'll see how in monochrome, skin smoothness and the way shadows are created directly shape the overall impression.

Color

Maternity photo in monochrome after professional makeup -- skin texture and shadows stand out without color

Monochrome

In monochrome photographs where color is absent, skin smoothness and shadow work directly become the impression. That's why professional makeup calculated for light and shadow dramatically elevates the beauty of the final artwork.

Additionally, hormonal changes, anemia, and sleep deprivation during pregnancy can make dark circles and pigmentation under the eyes more noticeable. Professional base makeup for photography naturally and gently refines the eye area. Furthermore, post-shoot retouching (skin refinement) can enhance the finish even further.

The Difference from Everyday and Salon Makeup

Everyday makeup aims to "look natural in daily life." Salon makeup aims to "look beautiful face-to-face." But makeup for photography aims to "look beautiful as a work of art, through the camera, under studio lighting." Even something as simple as how foundation is applied changes based on the direction and intensity of the lighting -- these delicate techniques directly impact the final photograph.

Choose from
3 Makeup Styles

3 Makeup Styles

At Studio Mozart, we offer three makeup styles to match your preferences and outfit. All makeup applications include a full foundation base, so there's no need to apply your own makeup before arriving.

Maternity photo 3 makeup styles -- comparison of Light, Natural, and Elegant finishes

Light make up

Maternity photo Light makeup finish -- natural look preserving bare skin beauty (monochrome)

Our lightest, most airy finish. No false lashes are applied, and eye shadow and nose contouring are kept minimal. This style is recommended for those who prefer a natural look that preserves the beauty of bare skin.

Recommended for

  • Those who prefer natural makeup in everyday life
  • Those wanting a relaxed atmosphere with casual outfits
  • Those who want a finish close to bare skin to keep "looking like yourself"

Natural make up

Maternity photo Natural makeup finish -- balancing photogenic appeal with natural beauty (monochrome)

The classic, well-balanced makeup that looks most natural in the finished photograph. False lashes are applied upon request, and eye shadow and nose contouring are more defined than Light makeup. This is our most popular style, especially for first-time clients.

Recommended for

  • First-time maternity photo clients who are unsure which to choose
  • Those who value both "photogenic appeal" and "natural beauty"
  • Those who want a versatile look that pairs well with any outfit style

Elegant make up

Maternity photo Elegant makeup finish -- glamorous and sophisticated look for photography (monochrome)

A full, glamorous finish with thorough makeup application. Featuring a sophisticated, grown-up look that's different from everyday style, this creates an elegant and dressy impression. False lashes are also applied generously upon request.

Recommended for

  • Those who want a glamorous look with dressy outfits
  • Those who want to enjoy a "special version of yourself" different from everyday life
  • Those creating artistic works with nude or semi-nude photography

We make fine adjustments based on your chosen makeup style and outfit style, leaning more casual or more formal as needed.

Not sure which style suits you? Don't worry.
On the day, our hair and makeup artist will discuss your preferences and decide together.
You can even change styles during the shoot.

Makeup Before & After

Before & After

See how much professional hair and makeup can transform an impression. Please view actual client Before & After examples below. Our approach is not about "making someone look like a different person" but "refining and bringing out each person's natural beauty" -- that is the Studio Mozart hair and makeup philosophy.

Client A

Starting from bare skin, professional hands carefully refine the eyes and skin, giving the entire photograph a softer, more polished impression. The anxiety before makeup transforms into confidence the moment you see yourself in the mirror -- that experience itself becomes a cherished memory of your maternity photo session.

After

Client B

Starting from bare skin in a bathrobe, we even out the skin tone with professional base makeup for photography, then carefully finish the eyes, brows, and lips. Natural smiles emerge because the power of makeup creates a genuine feeling of "I look beautiful." That sense of confidence shows in expressions throughout the shoot.

After

Under-eye dark circles, which are common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and lack of sleep, can be naturally refined through professional base makeup and post-shoot skin retouching.

Makeup Flow

At most studios, the makeup artist leaves once the application is done. At Studio Mozart, however, our hair and makeup artist stays by your side from the very first shot to the very last, making fine adjustments to hair and makeup as poses and angles change.

Photographer Komachi and our hair and makeup artist have been a team for over 20 years across magazine, commercial, and photo book shoots. "For this angle, sweep the bangs a little more" or "The lighting changed, so add more sheen to the skin" -- these adjustments happen naturally without a word being exchanged. This unspoken coordination, born from years of working together on set, supports the quality of every single shot.

Step 1 | Arrival & Consultation

Maternity photo shoot day -- hair and makeup consultation begins from bare skin upon arrival

Please arrive with no makeup on. Our hair and makeup artist will discuss the three makeup styles and outfit combinations with you. We'll listen to your preferences and decide on the day's look together.

Step 2 | Careful Application from Base Makeup

Maternity photo hair and makeup in progress -- professional application from base makeup in front of a Hollywood mirror

In front of the Hollywood mirror, the artist carefully applies makeup starting from the base. Foundation, eye makeup, lips, and hair styling -- approximately 60 minutes to prepare you for the optimal shooting condition.

What our hair and makeup team values most is bringing out the gentleness, bliss, and grace that only a pregnant woman possesses, from within. It's not just about "making you look pretty," but carefully shaping the beauty that already exists within you.

Maternity photo hair and makeup complete -- ready for the shoot after professional application

The makeup time also serves as relaxation, easing your nerves before the shoot. Seeing yourself in the mirror and feeling "I look beautiful" -- that sense of confidence leads to natural expressions throughout the session.

Step 3 | Shooting Begins & On-Set Adjustments

Maternity photo shoot in progress -- shooting begins with hair down style after makeup completion

After makeup is complete, the shoot begins seamlessly. The hair and makeup artist remains on set throughout, making fine adjustments to bangs and hair tips as poses and angles change. "For this angle, adjust the hair here a little" -- the well-coordinated teamwork with the photographer elevates the quality of every single shot.

Step 4 | Outfit Change & Hair Restyling

Maternity photo after outfit change -- hair restyled from down to updo for a fresh look

With the Gold Plan, you can completely change your hairstyle to match your outfit change. From a down style to an updo, or vice versa -- you can create works with completely different atmospheres in a single session. Makeup touch-ups are included, of course.

With the Classic Plan, a simplified outfit change is possible within the allotted time. We'll create variety through elements like adding or removing a shawl or wrap, ensuring you get shots with different moods even within a limited timeframe.

Benefits of On-Set Makeup Support

  • If your hair gets disheveled during the shoot, it's fixed right away on the spot
  • Hairstyle changes to match outfit changes (full changes with Gold Plan, time-permitting changes with Classic Plan)
  • Hair adjustments matched to the photographer's "I want to shoot from this angle"
  • Makeup stays fresh even during longer sessions

Hair Styling for
Your Maternity Photos

Hair Styling

"What should I do with my hair for the maternity photo shoot?" -- This is something many clients wonder about before their session. At Studio Mozart, you'll decide on your hairstyle on the day by consulting with our hair and makeup artist based on your outfit and makeup image. There's no need to decide in advance.

Down Style
Maternity photo hair down style -- soft and natural feminine hairstyle

A soft, naturally flowing style with hair worn down. Popular with those seeking a feminine and natural atmosphere. It pairs perfectly with casual outfits and relaxed poses. In shoots with a fan, the movement of the hair creates beautiful silhouettes.

Updo Style
Maternity photo updo hairstyle -- clean neckline with a sophisticated look

A clean, refined style with hair gathered up. The neckline and décolletage are beautifully highlighted, making it a great match for dressy outfits and formal atmospheres. Earrings and necklaces also stand out beautifully.

Half-Up Style

A versatile style that combines the best of both down and up styles. It keeps the face area clean while maintaining the softness of hair flowing in the back. Elegant and well-balanced, it pairs easily with any outfit -- a great choice when you're unsure.

With the Gold Plan, you can fully change
your hairstyle to match your outfit change.
Even with the Light and Classic Plans,
we'll accommodate hair changes as time allows.
"Natural with hair down for the first half,
sophisticated with an updo for the second half" --
this is a unique advantage of on-set makeup support.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Hair & Makeup

FAQ about Hair & Makeup

Can I bring my own makeup products?

Yes, absolutely. If you have foundation, lipstick, or other products that suit your skin, please feel free to bring them. Our hair and makeup artist will combine them with professional-grade cosmetics to achieve the optimal finish.

Is it okay if I have sensitive skin?

Please don't worry. We ask about your skin condition and allergies in advance, and select cosmetics suited to your skin. If you're concerned, we recommend bringing your own makeup products. Our hair and makeup artist can apply makeup using your own cosmetics, so you can enjoy the shoot without worrying about skin reactions. If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know when booking or during the consultation.

Is it okay if I have eyelash extensions?

Yes, clients with eyelash extensions are welcome. We adjust the eye makeup according to the condition of your extensions, so please come as you are.

I don't usually wear much makeup. Is that okay?

Of course! In fact, applying base makeup from bare skin actually produces an even more beautiful finish. You can choose a light, airy look like our Light make up style, so even those who aren't used to wearing makeup can enjoy a natural-looking result.

Can I discuss my hairstyle on the day?

Yes, you can discuss it with our hair and makeup artist on the day. We'll suggest the most flattering style -- down, up, half-up, and more -- based on your outfit and makeup image. There's no need to decide in advance.

Can hair and makeup be touched up during the shoot?

Yes, at Studio Mozart our hair and makeup artist is present from the very beginning to the very end of the shoot. Any hair or makeup issues are fixed immediately on the spot, so you can always shoot in your best condition.

I'm pregnant and worried about dark circles under my eyes. Will that be okay?

During pregnancy, hormonal changes, anemia, and lack of sleep can make dark circles under the eyes more noticeable. This is something many expectant mothers experience, so please don't worry. Our base makeup for photography naturally refines the eye area for a finish where dark circles are not a concern. And if there are areas that makeup alone can't fully cover, post-shoot retouching (skin refinement) can further refine the result naturally.

Can I change my hairstyle when I change outfits?

Yes, with the Gold Plan you can fully change your hairstyle at the time of your outfit change. For example, combinations like "natural with hair down for the first half, elegant with an updo for the second half" are possible. With the Light and Classic Plans as well, we accommodate hair changes as time permits. This is a service made possible by our on-set makeup support.

It's perfectly fine if you're not sure which makeup style suits you.
We'll listen to your preferences and carefully bring out your natural beauty.
Please feel welcome and at ease.
